"The train came out of the long tunnel into the snow country."

It is too famous that this tunnel which is drawn in novel "Snow Country" which Nobel prize-winning novelist Yasunari Kawabata wrote is Shimizu Tunnel between Doai station and Tsuchitaru station. Between Minakami station and Ishiuchi station including between those stations is commonly called Joetsu border, it is difficult part from the old days that continue a steep grade of 20 per-mill and immediate curves of a radius of 400m. Even the technology developed today, the train rarely cannot go forward because of fallen leaves or snow.

The down line overcomes the steep topography with Shin-Shimizu Tunnel of 13,500m long, Shin-Matsukawa tunnel of half-loop and a large curve of Iwappara. Because of this the route winds on the map, Doai Station was build 70 miters below the exit besides.

The Joetsu Shinkansen was inaugurated now, only five-service trains run in the daytime on a day, but a freight train and long-distance trains binding a metropolitan area and the Japan Sea side are run frequently at night, carry the part of the main artery.
